Building Medical Devices for Pediatric Orthopedics

skeletalPediatrix is an early-stage medtech startup in development, focused on pediatric upper-extremity orthopedic medical devices designed to fit existing intraoperative workflows and keep surgeons in control.

The Challenge in Pediatric Upper-Extremity Surgery

Pediatric orthopedic procedures involve small anatomy, open growth plates, off-label implant use, and limited tolerance for placement error. In many pediatric upper-extremity surgery and pediatric hand surgery technology use cases, surgeons rely on 2D fluoroscopy and clinical judgment to guide K-wire placement and implant positioning.

Large navigation platforms were not designed for short, distal-extremity pediatric K-wire workflows or the specific needs of growth-plate-sensitive surgery. This leaves a gap between what surgeons must accomplish in the operating room and what current navigation tools were built to support.

Our Approach

skeletalPediatrix is building lower-footprint, surgeon-controlled medical devices designed around existing intraoperative workflows. The goal is to provide simplified surgical navigation and intraoperative decision support that works within familiar medical imaging workflow support environments, rather than asking surgeons to change how they already operate.

The approach is validation-first and regulatory-aware, designed to support — not replace — clinical judgment. At a high level, skeletalPediatrix is exploring an AI-integrated medtech platform concept that aligns with responsible surgical AI and data-driven surgical decision support, without automating the surgeon’s role.

Why Pediatric Upper Extremity

Pediatric upper-extremity surgery is a setting where small anatomy, open growth plates, and long-term function intersect. Procedures can involve K-wire fixation, repeated fluoroscopic imaging, and situations where implants may be used off-label in pediatric patients.

These cases demand careful attention to growth-plate-sensitive surgery and precise implant positioning, yet they are often performed with tools and navigation concepts originally built for larger joints or longer procedures. By focusing on pediatric upper-extremity surgery and pediatric implant-placement support, skeletalPediatrix is concentrating on workflows that are clinically important and not well served by traditional navigation platforms.

Development Principles

Each development decision at skeletalPediatrix is guided by a small set of clear principles.

Surgeon-Controlled

The surgeon remains the decision-maker. Technology is support, not autonomy.

Pediatric-Specific

Built for anatomy and workflows where open growth plates, small structures, and long-term function matter.

Workflow-Conscious

Technology should fit the procedure, not force the procedure to fit the technology.

Existing-Imaging Compatible

Navigation support designed to work within familiar intraoperative imaging environments.

Validation-First

No clinical-performance claims without appropriate validation.

Responsible AI/SaMD Development

Regulatory-aware development with clear clinical boundaries and safety focus.

Who We’re Looking to Work With

skeletalPediatrix is interested in working with collaborators who share a focus on pediatric upper-extremity surgery and responsible development. We are looking to connect with:

  • Pediatric orthopedic surgeons
  • Pediatric hand and upper-extremity surgeons
  • Computer vision and medical imaging engineers
  • SaMD and regulatory advisors
  • Medical device accelerators
  • Angel investors with medtech experience
  • Academic and clinical research partners

For clinicians, this is an opportunity to help shape pediatric orthopedic innovation that respects existing workflows and clinical judgment. For technical and regulatory collaborators, it is a chance to contribute to regulatory-aware medtech development grounded in clear clinical use cases. For investors and accelerators, it offers exposure to a focused new approach to pediatric orthopedic navigation in an area of meaningful unmet need.

Note for Investors & Accelerators

skeletalPediatrix is focused on a specific workflow gap in pediatric upper-extremity surgery, where current navigation concepts do not align well with short, distal-extremity K-wire workflows and growth-plate-sensitive care. The company is committed to surgeon-centered design, disciplined clinical problem definition, and regulatory-aware development.

The work emphasizes lower-footprint surgical navigation concepts that are designed with imaging-aware pediatric workflows in mind and maintain clear clinical boundaries. For investors and accelerators, this represents an opportunity to support a team that is intentionally building in a measured, validation-first manner, with attention to dynamic intraoperative support that keeps the surgeon in control.
